What is it like moving to the Costa del Sol?
A removal from the UK to the Costa del Sol, from Sotogrande to Nerja, runs by road through France and Spain to the Málaga coast. Most deliveries go to apartments and urbanisations with community rules, gated access and lift bookings, so we confirm those details with the administrator before the delivery is scheduled.
The Costa del Sol is our highest-volume Spanish coastal corridor and the destination where British retirement and lifestyle relocation has been concentrated since the 1960s. The resort strip runs west from Torremolinos through Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Mijas Costa, Marbella, San Pedro de Alcántara, Estepona and Manilva to Sotogrande, and east of Málaga through Rincón de la Victoria and Torre del Mar to Torrox and Nerja. Together it hosts one of the largest British communities in Spain.
Costa del Sol housing is dominated by gated apartment developments and villa estates. Concierge clearance is standard practice — we brief the security gate or portería ahead of move day, confirm resident registration, and arrange service-vehicle access for the move-day window. Some Marbella and Sotogrande developments ask for advance notice before a service vehicle may enter; we book that as soon as the survey is done.
The Costa del Sol expat infrastructure is well-developed: bilingual lawyers, English-speaking comunidades de propietarios, dedicated expat ayuntamiento windows in many of the major coastal councils (Marbella, Mijas, Estepona). The padrón / empadronamiento process is comparatively smooth. The Málaga Oficina de Extranjería remains the bottleneck — apply NIE in the UK before flying.
Just behind the coast, the hillside villages of Mijas Pueblo, Benahavís, Ojén and Istán have smaller but established UK communities. They bring the usual Spanish village logistics: narrow lanes, tight turns and sometimes an unsealed final stretch.
The coast's geography shapes delivery days. Many urbanizaciones climb the hills behind Benalmádena, Mijas, Benahavís and Nerja on steep internal roads with hairpin bends, which a full-size lorry cannot take, so the load often moves to a smaller vehicle at the estate entrance. The comunidad usually wants notice through the administrador de fincas, a booked and protected lift, and sometimes a refundable deposit against damage to common areas. Between towns, the toll motorway (AP-7) and the free coast road (A-7) suit different times of day, and in high summer the beachfront streets are congested enough that we plan deliveries for the early morning.
