What is it like moving to Barcelona / Catalonia?
Moving from the UK to Barcelona or elsewhere in Catalonia means a road move through France into Spain, a customs claim for change-of-residence relief, and delivery planned around the city's low-emission zone, narrow Eixample and Gràcia streets, and building administrators who often want notice before a removal van arrives.
Barcelona is the corridor where corporate-and-creative moves dominate. Barcelona's housing stock is varied: listed Modernista apartments in the Eixample (Gaudí-era buildings), gentrified former-industrial in Born and Poble-sec, narrow medieval streets in the Gothic Quarter, modern apartment stock in Eixample-Esquerra and Sant Antoni, suburban-style residential in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi and Pedralbes. Barcelona's ZBE (Zona de Baixes Emissions / Low-Emission Zone) restricts older-vehicle entry to most of the city; we coordinate the moving-lorry access permit through the Ayuntament.
Beyond the city, the metropolitan area takes in Sant Cugat del Vallès, with its international schools and family housing, the coastal suburbs of Castelldefels and Sitges to the south-west, and Badalona to the north-east. Further out are the provincial cities: Tarragona, the Roman city to the south with an established UK retirement community along the Costa Daurada; Lleida, the inland agricultural capital; and Girona, the medieval city north of Barcelona with strong university links. Each province handles residence paperwork through its own Subdelegación del Gobierno.
Catalan-language paperwork is a meaningful consideration. Many official documents in Catalonia are in Catalan first (with Castilian Spanish often available); rental contracts, property deeds, and some municipal forms default to Catalan. UK movers typically navigate this via translators or bilingual local agents; for everyday paperwork (NIE, residencia at the Oficina de Extranjería) Castilian Spanish remains universal.
Getting a lorry into Barcelona takes paperwork of its own. The Rondes low-emission zone covers the city and several neighbouring municipalities, and a UK-registered vehicle has no Spanish environmental label, so ours are entered on the metropolitan area's register for foreign vehicles before they come in. Kerb space for a removal is reserved through the Ajuntament, and in the Eixample the superilles and green axes, such as Consell de Cent and the streets around Sant Antoni, have closed through-traffic on blocks that used to be easy to reach. In the Born and the Gothic Quarter, access is camera-controlled and the streets are too narrow for a lorry, so the last stretch is done by van and trolley.
