How the seasons, school year and Spanish holidays affect a UK to Spain move

The short answer
Spring and autumn are usually the easiest times to move from the UK to Spain: offices are working normally, coastal towns are quieter and the weather suits loading and unloading. August is the awkward month because Spanish administration slows sharply, and the Christmas-to-Reyes holiday period has a similar effect. School terms often decide the timing for families.
When is the best time of year to move to Spain?
No month is impossible, and only a couple are awkward, mostly for reasons that have nothing to do with weather. Spring and autumn are the easiest: Spanish offices run normally, ferry crossings are generally reliable, rental markets are active and coastal towns are not yet, or no longer, full of visitors.
For retirees with no school timetable, autumn is a popular choice: the heat has eased in the south, offices are back at full strength after summer and there is time to settle before winter.
Why is August a difficult month to move to Spain?
Spain substantially slows down in August, not in its shops and beaches but in its offices. Ayuntamientos run reduced staffing, Oficina de Extranjería and Policía Nacional appointments become scarcer, notarías and gestorías take their holidays, and small businesses close. A move that lands in early August can leave you waiting for a padrón or TIE appointment for much longer than it would take in the autumn.
If the furniture has to move in August, move the paperwork before it. Do everything that can be done from the UK, such as the visa, any NIE you need early and the customs documents, so that the Spanish end has little left to do but take delivery. Heat matters too: unloading in inland Andalusia or Madrid in high summer is slower and harder, and we plan early starts accordingly.
Is winter a good time to move?
Often, yes. Schedules are more flexible, access in tourist towns is far easier, and southern Spain is mild. The north and the Atlantic coast are wet and cool, so allow for weather protection at loading and delivery.
The awkward stretch is the Christmas-to-Reyes period, which runs longer in Spain than in the UK because the Epiphany holiday (Reyes) in early January is a major celebration and the working days around it are thin. Customs does not stop, but anything that needs a decision from a person in an office slows down.
When should families with school-age children move?
The start of the Spanish school year in early autumn is the natural point to join, which usually pushes a family move into the summer. Contact the school, or the regional education department, as early as you can; enrolment needs the padrón certificate, so register as soon as you have the address.
Because summer is also the slow administrative period, front-load the paperwork and expect some appointments to fall after the term has begun.
Does the season matter more for coastal and island moves?
Yes. On the Costa del Sol, the Costa Brava and the islands, high season means full streets, restricted parking, busy ferries and community rules that limit service vehicles in peak weeks. The same delivery outside the season is usually simpler. Island ferry space for removal vehicles also needs booking further ahead in summer.
