Overview — Spanish regional cost variation

Spanish cost of living varies dramatically by region. Madrid and Barcelona are at the top end; Costa del Sol coastal premium; Bilbao, San Sebastián, Valencia mid-tier; inland and rural Spain substantially cheaper.

Spain remains less expensive than UK southern English equivalents on average, particularly for property and dining out.

Most expensive regions

Madrid and Barcelona: comparable to UK London-area equivalents for housing in central districts.

Costa del Sol premium areas (Marbella Golden Mile, Sotogrande, Estepona high-end): premium coastal pricing.

San Sebastián and Bilbao premium areas: high but not Madrid-level.

Mallorca premium areas (Deià, Sóller valley, Palma central): high.

Ibiza: high in season; substantially lower off-season.

Moderate-cost regions

Valencia: substantial Spanish city with reasonable cost; growing UK community.

Bilbao, San Sebastián outer districts: moderate.

Most of the Costa Blanca outside premium villa areas: moderate.

Andalusia regional capitals (Seville, Granada, Córdoba): moderate.

Mallorca outside premium zones: moderate.

Most affordable regions

Inland Andalusia (Jaén, Córdoba interior, Almería interior): cheapest mainland Spanish region.

Galicia (outside major cities): rural-Spanish moderate-to-affordable.

Asturias rural and interior: affordable.

Castile-La Mancha and inland Castile-León: affordable rural Spanish living.

Extremadura: among the cheapest mainland Spanish regions.

Canary Islands inland (away from south-Tenerife/Gran-Canaria resort coasts): substantially cheaper than Spanish average.
