Cost considerations

Cost of moving UK to Spain

What shapes the figure — and what to budget for beyond the move

What shapes the move cost

The cost of the move itself reflects: volume (cubic metres of goods), distance from UK origin to Spanish destination, route choice (Eurotunnel + France overland, OR direct ferry to northern Spain, OR Balearic / Canary ferry), access at both ends, and any optional extras.

A full-house move from London to the Costa del Sol sits in a different cost band from a partial-load student move from Manchester to Madrid. We give one figure on the written quote covering door-to-door, customs, and insurance.

This guide does not quote specific figures — costs vary substantially. The survey is free, the quote is no-obligation.

Beyond the move — categories to budget for

Property purchase costs: notario fees + plusvalía tax + ITP (Impuesto sobre Transmisiones Patrimoniales) typically 8-13% of the purchase price for an existing property; lower for new builds (which use IVA + AJD).

Rental deposits: typically 2-3 months' rent in Spain. Higher in tight markets like Madrid or Barcelona.

NIE application fees: under €30.

Healthcare gap: private Spanish health insurance for the period before SSN registration completes (typically 3-6 months). Plan €50-200 per person per month.

Vehicle-related: ITV (around €40-60), matriculación fees (€100-200), Spanish car insurance.

School-related: state schools free; supplies, school trips, optional uniforms add up. International schools carry substantial fees.

Translation costs: traducciones juradas of UK documents for Spanish administrative use, €30-100 per document.

Hidden costs — what catches people

Dual-residency tax filing in the year of the move: partial-year UK and partial-year Spanish tax. Speak to a Spanish gestor / asesor fiscal familiar with both systems.

Spanish language courses for adults: highly recommended in non-expat-saturated regions.

Child-equipment refresh for Spanish schools.

Cultural-fit set-up: kitchen, bathroom, heating system in your new Spanish property may need different appliances (Spanish electricity is 230V like UK but plug shape differs from UK; you'll need adapters or to replace UK appliances).

Annual property taxes: IBI (Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles) on Spanish properties — modest individually but recurring.

Budgeting realistically

Practical approach: budget the move itself, the property completion costs, the residency setup, and a contingency for the first 6 months of dual-living overhead.

Cash flow: many Spanish costs are paid up-front. Property purchase deposits, rental deposits, first-month bills, school registration fees — all hit in the first 8 weeks. Plan liquidity accordingly.

Insurance is non-negotiable: home, vehicle, health, contents. Spanish liability law is strict.
